Thermals in a Big Winged Easy Star
Today was hot as buggery. About 34 degrees, and the sun, it was worse... The perfect day to fly! So I decided to head out west a bit, and visit my mate Bud. Bud decided that we would meet up at the airstrip, about an hour from me. So I packed the truck, and away I went.
We arrived late in the afternoon around 3.30pm, and the sun had a real bite to it. I set the truck up with its nose to the sun which offered some protection in the back to prep the aircraft. One of Bud's mates had a powered slope soarer up, and the thermals he was catching were quite incredible. Within a few minutes, it was a spec in the sky. I wondered if my Easy Star with its big wings would catch anything. Weighing in at 1.6kg, I doubted it.
I could not have been more wrong!! After flying about minding my own business, my right wing kicked up like someone had just jumped on the left. I knew what that was, so I circled around to find it, and find it I did! It was crazy. Motor off in this fat pig and she was going up up up!!
I was having a great time, but the wind was all over the place. One minute from the SE, the NE, it was really unpredictable. To the point where it ended up pushing my EZ Star sideways, which to a fair bit of throttle to pull it out.
A great day had... Check out the video below.
Cheers
The Mongrel
