ew-m001a.jpgWell today it happened.  My beloved Cessna hit terra-firma with a thud!  Thankfully not too much damage as she hit a tree and just fell to the ground.  Still, the impact was hard enough that it broke the prop!!  So I figured it was time to do something about the old motor.  The motor was an old E-Watts like this one from Wattsuprc.com.au.  She was turning a 7x5 prop and although there were some skeptics, she flew like an animal.  However, time had taken its toll on the little motor and it was time to get something more serious onboard.

So I opted for another Ewatts motor like the one you see here.  I would need to turn a bigger prop if I was to get the most out of this prop.  I tried a 9x6 first, and that nearly tore the plane apart.  I dropped it down to an 8x4 and it was great.  Still a little vibration under full power, but not enough to worry me.

This new power plant did not come without its problems.  I would have to fashion  an entire new motor mount, as well as doing some reinforcing of the wings to take the extra 'Gs' I was likely to throw at it.

As you can see from the pic below, I had to channel out a section if the wing and add a carbon spar.  Not too hard, just fiddly.  Now she can go hard and not have to worry about ripping its wings off! And that has to be a good thing.
